The Speech

The first thing I noticed about Mr. Bush's speech was poor composition.

Example: "We're a nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws. We are also a nation of immigrants, and we must uphold that tradition, which has strengthened our country in so many ways. These are not contradictory goals -- America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time. We will fix the problems created by illegal immigration, and we will deliver a system that is secure, orderly, and fair. So I support comprehensive immigration reform that will accomplish five clear objectives."

This should have been written as 'We're a nation of law, and our laws must be enforced. We must fix the problems associated with illegal immigration, but that is only possible if we deliver a system that is dependable, orderly, and fair. We are a nation of immigrants and that tradition will be upheld. Immigration strengthens our country in countless ways. Because of this, I support comprehensive immigration reform that will accomplish clear objectives:'

This is an emblematic example of awkward writing which has accentuated Mr. Bush's rickety communication skills.
