Seventeen years ago today, peaceful protesters in Tiananmen Square were violently dispersed by government agents. It was not the first attempt by the government; military units from remote regions were used after local troops were judged as too passive and overly sympathetic. Estimates on civilian casualties range widely; thousands were killed, arrested, or went missing after the massacre.
