Everyday Drivel From Cable News

Anna Nicole Smith was no Marilyn Monroe.

She had ten minutes of fame in the early 1990's because she was a beautiful, buxom, and blond (though ten full minutes might be generous; a Playboy spread in 93' and a minor, nearly non-speaking, part in Naked Gun 33 & 1/3). She then married a Billionaire 63 years her senior and spent most of the remainder of her life fighting for a piece of his estate in court.

She returned for her final five minutes in 2002 by making an ass of herself on her short-lived reality show, showed up slopped at the 2004 American Music Awards, and finished off her celebrity proclaiming the miraculous properties of a weight-loss drug called Trim Spa (especially when combined with an all-liquid diet).

A flash in the pan versus Americana. The only modern equivalent who springs to my mind is Pamela Anderson, who has been popular for almost twenty years. The perils of the 24 hour news cycle...
