Almost everyone (including President Bush) depicts the Golden Dome bombing in Sumarra (Feb. 22, 2006) as thee milestone for intensified strife, almost as if it alerted Americans that Iraq would be difficult. Hogwash.
The real marker was August 19, 2003, when a bomb ripped through UN headquarters, injured over 100 and killed 22, including Sergio Vieira de Mello. Staff, once numbering over 600, rapidly shrunk after a UN committee recommended all international staff be pulled out of Iraq. The entire world winced as its ultimate international intermediary withdrew and eschewed further involvement.
