Whether you know it or not, Americans eat genetically modified foods (called Franken-foods in Europe). The crops are engineered to produce more edible end product, to require less watering, endure harsher weather than they otherwise would, etc. The United States government has for some time been pushing for African acceptance of such crops. Sub-Saharan Africa (below the big desert), in particular, is in need of international food aid because of massive famine afflicting tens of millions of PEOPLE.
From the Agriculture Minister of Zambia, Mundia Sikatana, "We do not want (genetically modified) foods and our hope is that all of us can continue to produce non-(genetically modified) foods." His nation currently has 1.1 Million citizen who require international aid to sustain themselves. Zambia is actually a nation faring better than most with just under 10% of the population suffering. They have a comparatively low HIV/AIDS rate of infection (BTW, AIDS is killing a continent, if you weren't aware). These displays of progress in particular areas make Mr. Sikatana's remarks all the more reckless. The government can solve problems; it's choosing not to solve famine.
