Following election 2004, Democrats began meticulously courting veterans of 'the war on terror' to counter an issue (national security) which ostensibly cost them the previous election. Fifty-five veterans are running as Democrats in the 2006 election, but very few are expected to win. As a consequence, Democrat election organizations are channeling funds to more competitive races.
First there was Paul Hackett, who unsuccessfully ran for an Ohio congressional seat in a 2005 special election. He then pursed a senatorial seat, but his campaign was undercut, according to Mr. Hackett, by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY). After a baldfaced effort to enhance their national security image, Democratic support for their much heralded veteran candidates has devolved into politics as usual.
