Today (before lunch), Ted Kennedy (D-MA) attempted a coup d'état of the Judiciary Committee. At the end of his second series of questions, he tried to move the committee into closed session to vote about CAP records (CAP information). Chairman Arlen Spector (R-PA) said he would consider the request but Kennedy demanded immediate action. He threatened "vote after vote," tipping the Democrats' hand. I understand Mr. Kennedy's disappointment and frustration; his attempts to strike a crushing blow against Judge Alito have thus far failed. He started his second round of questions when he asked for three explanations of 'initial period'. As Judge Alito stated (three times), twelve years after the fact would not be considered part of any 'initial period'.
Arlen Spector displayed his consummate statesmanship, keeping the proceedings civil despite the sharpness of the exchange. He is an almost ideal Chair from the Democrat perspective; a moderate Republican who is pro-life. Roe v. Wade seems to have taken a backseat to CAP; a good sign for the Republicans. The Dems are clutching at straws...
The slow-down stratagem is underway; it just isn't working.
Maybe Ted's just grumpy today, we'll let him slide.
